A graduate of Phillips Academy, Yale and Harvard Business School, Walter J. P. Curley was the US Ambassador to Ireland from 1975-1977 and to France from 1989-1993.
He was a Partner of J. H. Whitney & Company from 1958-1975, and with the California-Texas Oil Company in India and Italy from 1948-1957. In 1978, he established his own venture capital operation, W.J.P. Curley, in New York. Mr. Curley served as New York City Commissioner of Public Events and Chief of Protocol during the Lindsay Administration and was a Trustee of the New York Public Library.
A Director of numerous corporations in the US and abroad, including the Bank of Ireland, The Crane Co., The New Yorker Magazine, New York Life Insurance Co. Fiduciary Trust International and France Growth Fund, Banque Paribas International, Mr. Curley has written four books and served as a Captain in the Marine Corps in World War II.
He is Chairman of the International Board of Sotheby’s. Mr. Curley is Trustee Emeritus of the Frick Collection, and Honorary Chairman of the French-American Foundation. He holds the rank of Commandeur in the French Legion of Honor. He also holds decorations from the United States Army, Navy, Marine Corps, and the Republic of China.
Mr. and Mrs. Curley, who live in Manhattan and the West Coast of Ireland, have two children and seven grandchildren.
