International Affairs Fellowship

The Council of American Ambassadors (CAA) International Affairs Fellowship program enables six undergraduate students per year to come to Washington, D.C. and participate in a prestigious summer program that combines mentoring by former U.S. ambassadors, practical training through internships at the Department of State and academic studies in international affairs.

To qualify, students first must be selected for a D.C.-based summer internship at the Department of State. Please note that the State Department's application deadline is November 3 of the year prior to the summer internship. Please click here for more information.

Once they have gained acceptance to the Department of State's program, students then may apply for the CAA Fellowship.

In addition to the State Department internship, CAA Fellows, known as the Ambassadors Walter and Leonore Annenberg Fellows, receive valuable advice and guidance from former U.S. ambassadors, who are members of the CAA and who serve as mentors, meeting with the Fellows on a regular basis during their stay in Washington, D.C. to discuss international affairs issues and careers.

The program also enables the Fellows, through the Engalitcheff Institute on Comparative Political and Economic Systems (ICPES) of The Fund for American Studies, to earn academic credit for their courses at Georgetown University, reside in university housing and participate in lectures and visits to key institutions of national government. Please click here for more information:

To be eligible for the CAA Fellowship program, the applicant must be extremely motivated and must have:

1. Expressed a strong interest in a career in the field of international affairs.

2. Completed his/her junior year of undergraduate study and be enrolled as a senior undergraduate in the semester immediately following the summer State Department internship.

3. Demonstrated a high level of excellence in academics and leadership in extra-curricular activities.

4. Achieved competency in at least one foreign language.

5. Undertaken study and/or travel abroad.

It is hoped that the potent combination of mentoring, practical training and academic study will inspire and prepare the Fellows to assume the responsibility of helping this nation to strengthen our alliances and promote democracy, peace, human rights and prosperity in our relations with other countries around the world.

How to Prepare an Effective CAA Fellowship Application

This list is available for download (see section below).

1. The Council of American Ambassadors' Fellowship program is targeted to undergraduates who have completed their junior year of university studies and are entering their senior year. Please ensure that your application conforms to the program's eligibility criteria.

2. Application for the CAA Fellowship requires completion of the online application of our partner, The Fund for American Studies, in addition to the following:

a) Two (2) distinct essays are required to support your CAA Fellowship application:

The first essay, which should be no more than 500 words in length, should discuss the reasons why you wish to pursue a career in international affairs and why you believe that the CAA Fellowship can help you to achieve your career goals. The purpose of this essay is to enable us to understand your thinking about career development in diplomacy/international affairs and whether a CAA Fellowship would truly make a critical difference for your future. Note: This essay should be sent to the attention of the Fellowship Committee at the CAA via email (council@americanambassadors.org) or fax (202.296.0926). It may also be submitted to The Fund for American Studies to satisfy The Fund's "Statement of Purpose" requirement.

The second essay, which should be no more than 750 words in length, should discuss a challenging international issue and the reasons why the issue is important. It also should outline recommendations for resolution. This essay is intended to demonstrate your ability to analyze and conceptualize solutions to major policy issues. Note: This essay may be submitted to The Fund for American Studies to satisfy the Fund's "Topical Essay" requirement.

b) Two (2) letters of recommendation from faculty or supervisors who know your work are required to support your CAA Fellowship application. One of these letters of recommendation will satisfy the TFAS requirement. Please follow the instructions posted on the TFAS Web site for submitting these letters.

3. It is to your advantage to submit a complete, carefully prepared, formatted and proof-read application. Don't let typos, careless errors or missing or incomplete information spoil the impression of an otherwise strong application.
