Ambassador Sue Cobb’s Mt. Everest Climb featured in State Magazine

Ambassador Sue Cobb wrote about her 1988 Mt. Everest Climb for the July/August edition of State Magazine.

Ambassador Cobb wrote, “Mt. Everest was a challenge I never expected to encounter until I was invited to climb the 29,029-foot peak at a time when no woman from the United States had summited Everest – and I was 50 years old.”

Traveling with a team called “Cowboys on Everest,” Ambassador Cobb trekked through China and Tibet to reach Mt. Everest.  She said, “The Everest trip was a great adventure, though traveling through Tibet during monsoon season we encountered unanticipated delays and unforeseen hazards, including monumental rains, landslides, earthquakes and enormous rock slides.  Once, we were detained by members of the Chinese military.”

The team encountered more challenges when they began to summit the mountain.  Please follow the link to read Ambassador Cobb’s full account of the climb: http://digitaledition.state.gov/publication/?i=169420&4&p=37
