Ambassadors Roundtable
The next Ambassadors Roundtable luncheon will be held on Wednesday, February 15 at noon in the Anderson Room (second floor) of The Metropolitan Club (1700 H Street, NW).
The Ambassadors Roundtable is a members-only program. Due to the success of the program we regret that we are unable to accommodate spouses or other guests. Advance registration is required. Please contact the Council office to reserve your place.

ABELARDO L. VALDEZ ELECTED PRESIDENT OF THE COUNCIL OF AMERICAN AMBASSADORS |
Ambassador Abelardo L. Valdez has been elected President of the Council of American Ambassadors (CAA).
Ambassador Valdez practices international law in Washington, DC and San Antonio, Texas. He served as the United States Ambassador and Chief of Protocol for The White House from 1979-1981. Ambassador Valdez also was the Assistant Administrator for Latin America and the Caribbean of the US Agency for International Development from 1977-1979; General Counsel for the Inter-American Foundation from 1973-1975; and an attorney for the Overseas Private Investment Corporation from 1971-1973. During his military service, he served as a military aide to President Lyndon B. Johnson.
Ambassador Valdez received his LL.M. degree from Harvard Law School, J.D. degree from Baylor Law School and a B.S. degree in civil engineering from Texas A&M University. He also pursued graduate studies in international law at The Hague Academy of International Law in The Netherlands. He has lectured and written extensively on international trade and investment issues and US-Latin American relations and has been a visiting lecturer or visiting professor at Harvard University, Texas A&M University, Baylor University, Trinity University and the University of Santa Clara. He is recognized as one of the original proponents and architects of the North American Free Trade Agreement and of a Western Hemisphere Free Trade Area, and served as an advisor on the NAFTA negotiations.
Ambassador Valdez has received numerous awards for his public service and has been decorated by King Juan Carlos of Spain with the Order of Isabel La Catolica. He has received the Distinguished Alumnus Award from Baylor University and the Founder''s Award of the American GI Forum. He resides in Washington, DC and San Antonio, Texas.

DAVIS PUBLIC DIPLOMACY FELLOWSHIP |
The Council is pleased to announce that Nick Snyder has been selected as the Council''s 2011-2012 Davis Public Diplomacy Fellow. Mr. Snyder is currently a Foreign Service officer assigned to U.S. Embassy Beijing as an Assistant Spokesman, a position which he assumed in July 2008 following two years of Mandarin language training. He holds several portfolios in the Press Office, specializing in print media and serving as the point person for media freedom issues. Previously, Mr. Snyder served as a member of the Operations Center''s INR Watch from 2005-2006. His first Foreign Service assignment was at United States Consulate Casablanca where his duties included consular affairs, counterterrorism, and political reporting. He is the recipient of an individual Meritorious Honor Award, as well as several group Meritorious Honor Awards.
Mr. Snyder was an Information Officer at the United Nations Secretariat, where he helped organize the 2002 Financing for Development Conference in Monterrey, Mexico. A journalist for several years, he worked as a staff reporter for the Los Angeles Business Journal and The Hollywood Reporter, among other publications. He began his career as an M&A analyst at the investment bank Dillon, Read & Co. Inc. He received an A.B. magna cum laude in English and American Literature and Language from Harvard University in 1996.
The Davis Public Diplomacy Fellowship program combines on-the-job training with academic study and mentoring by former U.S. ambassadors, public diplomacy officers and communications executives. Its purpose is to enhance the conduct and practice of U.S. public diplomacy through the provision of specialized training and mentoring opportunities for mid-career officers.

2012 CAA FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM |
The Council of American Ambassadors is pleased to announce that for the ninth year in a row, we will offer our Fellowship program to outstanding undergraduates who will have completed their junior year by the start of the 2012 Fellowship program. As part of the program, six individuals, known as the "Ambassadors Walter and Leonore Annenberg Fellows," will receive mentoring by former U.S. ambassadors, who are members of the Council, an internship at the Department of State and academic training at Georgetown University.
Only individuals who have been accepted by the State Department as Washington, DC-based summer 2012 interns are eligible to apply.
